Paolo Fresu & Omar Sosa – Alma

“Energia”, “poesia” e “spiritualità” sembrano i termini grammaticali più adatti per identificare a prima vista il lavoro di questa nuova avventura musicale di Paolo Fresu e Omar Sosa.
In un tempo in cui tangenzialità, trasversalismo, crossing e altri vocabili simili sembrano farla da padrone nel mondo che predilige identificare la musica con un’etichetta, ciò che effettivamente viene posto prepotentemente all’attenzione di questo lavoro discografico è l’ideale quanto improbabile fil rouge che riesce a collegare Cuba e Mediterraneo.
Fresu e Sosa “danzano”.
Danzano in modo sicuramente latino attorno al vincente mix di jazz, musica cubana, Africa e world music che sono riusciti a creare.
E se Fresu è ormai quell’importante icona della musica contemporanea che tutti riconoscono è sorprendente un Sosa sempre più stimolante e con orizzonti talmente allargati da riuscire – in alcuni momenti – a far tornare alla mente filosofie di pensiero compositivo care ad un vero maestro del suono quale Joe Zawinul.
Gli stilemi declinati nelle undici tracce equamente divise nelle firme dei due protagonisti di questo bellissimo Alma sono molteplici.
Un disco ricco di chiaroscuri importanti ma dove i colori spirituali restano in evidente intelligente equilibrio con la tecnica e questo è reso specialmente evidente dalla eccellente cover di quella sorta di piccola masterpiece che risponde al nome di Under African Skies scritta da Paul Simon e omaggiata dal duo con una delicatezza e leggerezza davvero rara. E se – ad impreziosire alcuni tratti dell’opera – viene poi chiamato un vero maestro dell’arte sonora quale Jaques Morelenbaum, allora il cerchio è presto fatto. Un altro piccolo tassello di bellezza che va ad impreziosire la piccola ma sempre più importante Tǔk Music, ancora una volta attenta anche ai dettagli grafici, come la bella copertina tratta dall’opera di Alessandro Adelio Rossi.

“Energy”, “poetry” and “spirituality” sound as the most proper words to identify this new musical adventure by Paolo Fresu and Omar Sosa.
In a time where crossing, tangentiality, transversialism and similar words seems to be essential in a world which prefers to identify music by genre, what strongly comes to our attention in this new recording is an ideal, and unlikely, thin red line linking Cuba to the Mediterranean.
Fresu and Sosa  are “dancing”.
They dance in a latin way around a winning mix of jazz, Cuban and world music they were be able to create. While Fresu is a well known important icon of contemporary music, Sosa is surprisingly challenging, offering such wide scenarios recalling Joe Zawinul in some way.
So many different styles in the 11 tracks of this amazing “Alma”. A record full of an important chiaroscuro but also a record where spiritual colours balance themselves with  tecnique, this is mostly evident in the re-interpretation of the little masterpiece titled “Under African Skies” written by Paul Simon, here the duo plays with very rare lightness and gentleness.
But if, to enrich some aspect of this work, the duo is joined by a real master of the arts such as Jaques Morelenbaum, well, the circle is closed.
Another small piece is added to the tiny but increasingly important Tǔk Music, a label always careful to every little detail,  graphic too, as shown by the beautiful cover taken from a work by Alessandro Adelio Rossi.
