Paolo Fresu Quintet feat. Daniele Di Bonaventura – Jazzy Christmas

When I was a child two things aroused my curiosity: time and sounds of the world.
Growing up these two dogmas have remained unchanged, even though with the passing of time they moved from an external dimension to an inner one. Little by little I started to hear the endless emotional sounds who lives inside us, the heart’s mysterious rhythm. I really thought about these two entities, and I understand that there will always be something deeply obscure.
That’s the reason why I fell in love with them, and it will be like that until my last breathe in this world.
With this sweet and bitter mystery in my heart I tried to play some notes, the ones you can find in this album.

“Tributes are a kind of fashion in jazz and today it’s cool to declare oneself a rockstar. That’s why I pulled myself back from dedicating an album to The Doors, my absolute favorite band, for such a long time. Then my love to Jim Morrison and his mates dominated.

OverDOORS, despite facing some troubles at the beginning, has been growing strongly. The first doubt was wich songs to choose: I wish I could revisit them all. Under my fingers I had another doubt, due to the different possibilities of how to reinterpret the historical Californian band. For one month, only one question was on my mind: should I choose a cover approach or a free musical revision? I actually took both, wearing Converse, feeling free to analyse and fit back [Light My Fire], singing and whispering melodies both ethereal and eternal [like Blue Sunday and Yes, The River Knows]. I am curious to see my friends’ reaction to the groove Waiting For The Sun; Carlo, Piero and all others, whom I dreamt with, sitting on a bench, flying on the notes of LA Woman. Luca

Roses of the Day is composed by PETRINA, after Experiences no.2 by John Cage The score is available from C.F. Peters [www.edition-peters.com]

e.e. cummings

________________________________________________________________

Reinterpreting other artists‘ pieces has been the beginning of my adventure as a composer and songwriter, the first step towards writing my own pieces. It was a way to appropriate those songs I loved, to be part of their light with a small piece of myself.
So over the years I reinterpreted much music, from Manuel Saumell to Venetian songs, from Cuban lullabies to standard jazz, from Radiohead to Frederic Rzewski. This album proposes a selection of them, a sort of favourite playlist, that opens and ends with two short songs, almost musical aphorisms that I prefered to leave untouched: Only by Morton Feldman and Can You Follow? by Jack Bruce. For the others I have chosen to make room for harmonic fantasies and piano inserts, sometimes wandering quite a lot from the original melodies and structures, as if the music in front of me was not still, but could move, change shapes and colours, take root in new lands and grow differently.
It is like coming back from a night dream, one of those that is able to give a different light to the new day.
e.e.cummings, a famous American poet who inspired, amongst other things, two songs by Björk and one composition by Luciano Berio, may have thought this same thing while writingit it is at moments after I have dreamed, the poem that John Cage put into music in Experiences no.2.
Roses of the Day is my reinterpretation of that song, and takes as a title an image contained in the last two lines, the ones Cage mysteriously omitted, and which I consider the most revealings:

turning from the tremendous lie of sleep / i watch the roses of the day grow deep
e.e. cummings
